Our third industry talk was delivered by Nigel Bidwell (Partner) and Joshua Cherry (Senior Architect) from JTP Architects.

Approximately 30 Post 16 students and a couple of Year 11 students all listened intently to the talk. Nigel and Joshua started to introduce the subject by highlighting the influence that has been made by different architects and different styles of architecture. They talked about how John McAslan was the architect to design the New London Bridge Station as well as Harris South Norwood. This was something that the students could relate to specifically the students who were studying at Harris South Norwood.

Both Nigel and Joshua explained how they both went to university to study architecture as an undergraduate degree prior to working in an Architecture firm for a year before returning to university to complete the Master’s Degree programme. On completion of the Master Degree, one has to complete a further year of studies in the workplace to become fully qualified. They explained that architecture is an evolving subject and there are now a variety of different pathways to final qualification. The Royal Institute of British Architects are currently in development of introducing apprenticeships. They explained that a number of Architects are completing their Masters Degrees while working in a firm.

The student’s feedback was exceptionally positive, one student mentioned that the presentation was very clear and informative and a number of the students mentioned how they were going to do additional research into universities and the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects).
