Healthcare Careers Day
1st JanuaryOn the 19th of December 2018, more than 200 students from across the federation attended the Healthcare Careers Day. Applying to medical courses at university is very competitive and it is essential that students are prepared in advance. In addition, we want our students who are interested in science-based careers to consider a wide range of options, including nursing, physiotherapy, radiography and so on.
We were exceptionally fortunate to have volunteers from the University of Leicester, the University of Greenwich and a volunteer from the Maudsley Trust, speaking to the students about different medically related topics.
Morning Activities
The day began with Sarah Addison from the University of Leicester who delivered a workshop on a career in medicine. We were fortunate to have a former Harris Academy Peckham alumni student who spoke to our students about his journey into medicine. The classroom which comfortably seated 60 was bursting at the seams, as close to 80 students listened intently to Sarah talk about medicine, the application process for medical courses and how competitive applying to medicine can be.
Afternoon Activities
In the afternoon, Sarah spoke to the students about medical ethics which was a very popular workshop. This is an essential topic for any student considering a career in a healthcare-related field.
Pat Pass from the University of Greenwich spoke about careers in nursing and paramedic science. This workshop was also very popular with the students and very well received.
Sarah Rodway-Swanson spoke about some of the volunteering that students can do at the Maudsley Trust. For every healthcare career, it is essential that students demonstrate that they have worked in a caring profession and the Maudsley Trust offer students the opportunities to do some volunteering. Sarah also spoke about opportunities in mental health nursing and associated careers. This was another excellent workshop which was appreciated by the students.
The final workshop was delivered by Lesley Tannock, (Head of Careers – Harris Federation) who spoke about a range of careers in the healthcare sector. As a former nurse, she has worked alongside a number of healthcare professionals outlined within the workshop.
The afternoon proved to be a great success for the students and hopefully this will assist with their applications to university when they are in Year 13.
